There is a great acronym for the word “Law.” L-A-W stands for Love Always Wins. And love is the fulfilling of the law of cause and effect or karma.
God plays no favorites. Love is equal for the just and unjust, the wise and the simple, the rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick. While God is love, personal and indwelling, God is also law, perfect and immutable. And though Spirit—the life essence of each one of us—loves us with a love beyond human comprehension, this same spirit is principle—eternal and unchanging.
A small child can place her hand on a hot burner—and learn an instant lesson in the law of cause and effect. But that is not always the case. There is a man named Bob who harbors some unhappy thoughts—what’s the world coming to, everything is out of control, the economy is a mess, everyone is getting the flu, I’m always sick. With no understanding of what he is doing, Bob gathers about himself insignificant particles of negativity. These sap his strength and attack him at his most vulnerable point—perhaps a physical organ, perhaps his pocketbook, perhaps in a relationship.
It is easy for the child to see the correlation between fire and pain. But it may take more insight to see the connection between Bob’s suffering and the thoughts that he has perhaps nourished for years. We can ask ourselves, “If God is love, why doesn’t God intervene and save Bob and others like him from their plights?
Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, once taught, “Love in Divine Mind is the idea of universal Unity in expression. Love is the power that joins and binds in Divine Harmony the Universe and everything in it. The Laws of the Universe, like the Laws of Music and Mathematics, know only how to be. Their use or misuse is up to us as creatures of free will.”
We affirm that we are going to lose weight, stop smoking, or start paying our bills—and then things get worse before they get better. When we make that kind of declaration, those error thoughts in consciousness come forth so we can be aware of them and let them go once and for all. Getting caught in the outer appearance is getting caught in fact and not truth. Fact is the changing reality. The truth is absolute unchanging and eternal. So, if we have financial problems in our lives, or a health problem, for example, it may simply be a fact, but it is not the eternal truth of the situation.
The good news is that when we take on new beliefs, ideas, or feelings, they cannot help but be reflected in our lives. And once things do come into our lives, we have absolute control over our reactions to them.
We do not have to invest a lot of time and energy into figuring out what specific thoughts and feelings caused specific circumstances. If we are lost and stop at a gas station to ask directions, we don’t have to know how we got there. All we need to know is how we get from where we are to where we want to go.
When thoughts and feelings are synchronized and going in the same direction, and we are focusing on a vision of what we want to see, we are wielding a powerful, life-transforming tool. And then we experience the fulfillment of the law—which is love in expression. And that helps to call forth the power of grace.
