In thinking of Mothers’ Day today, my own mother came to mind and also my two sons, two daughters-in law, and my four grandchildren. I was close with my mom and have been close with my sons and their wives as well. From the very beginning to the present day, I have loved being a mother and also a grandma.
In my meditation on the subject, I also found myself thinking of Myrtle Fillmore, often called “The Mother of Unity.” Charles and Myrtle Fillmore were the co-founders of Unity. Today, that which they gave birth to in faith is blessing the whole world.
Myrtle prayed with countless people during her time. Those who sought her prayer blessings brought forth renewed bodies, prosperity and success, and healed relationships. She was gifted in a practical application of Truth. And there were those who found that her influence brought forth for them a new way of living and working with others.
Myrtle proved the Christ Truth in her own life and affairs. The healing and prospering ideas of Divine Mind moved through her consciousness and began an amazing ministry of love. Today, through Unity World Headquarters, Unity Worldwide Ministries, and the many Unity centers throughout the world, this ministry continues and serves all who seek it's inspirational and practical help.
The only book that Myrtle Fillmore wrote was Wee Wisdom's Way, which was an expression of her love for children and her interest in helping them understand God's wonderful Truth. (Several other books were authored by Myrtle from notes compiled by others: Myrtle Fillmore’s Healing Letters and How to Let God Help You). Her desire to bless children with rich spiritual ideas flowered into Wee Wisdom, a monthly magazine for children which began in 1894. When it was discontinued in 1991, it was America's oldest continuously published children’s magazine in the country. Myrtle was the editor for many years. She stayed focused on a commitment to children, not only in the magazine, but in the youth education that was begun in Unity. Children have always been honored and included.
I remember hearing Thomas Witherspoon, author of Myrtle Fillmore: Mother of Unity, speak one time in the Seattle area. He told the story of how he wrote the book when little was known about her. He discovered a wealth of information about the true Myrtle by reading through the old Wee Wisdom magazines. And, it is a book well worth reading to learn more about this incredible woman who began Unity with her healing, and then, along with her husband Charles, made it possible for all of us to experience these amazing Unity teachings.
Since Unity has been such an important part of my life, I am remembering Myrtle, the Mother of Unity, on this Mother’s Day weekend and feeling blessed by her life and example.
Love & blessings!
